Born in Jamaica, New York, on January 12, 1950, Jackson Lee moved to Texas as a child. She earned a law degree from the University of Virginia and worked as a civil rights lawyer before entering politics.
Jackson Lee was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1994 and quickly became known for her outspokenness and advocacy for minority rights. She served on several key committees, including the Judiciary Committee and the Commerce Committee.
Jackson Lee was also a vocal supporter of women's rights and reproductive justice. She co-sponsored the Violence Against Women Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act.
