Ben Sasse Resigns as University of Florida President

Citing Wife's Health, Former Republican Senator Steps Down After Less Than Two Years in Role

University of Florida president Ben Sasse has unexpectedly announced his resignation, effective immediately. In a letter to the university community, Sasse cited his wife's health as the reason for his decision.

"It is a profound privilege to lead the University of Florida," Sasse wrote. "However, in recent months, my wife Melissa's health has deteriorated, and I need to be by her side during this important time."

Sasse, a former Republican senator from Nebraska, was appointed president of the University of Florida in January 2023. His tenure has been marked by controversy, including his opposition to tenure for faculty and his support for a proposal to ban diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives on campus.
