Argentina beat Ecuador on penalties to reach Copa America semis

Martinez, Zapata goals give Colombia 2-0 win over Argentina

Argentina defeated Ecuador 4-2 on penalties to advance to the semifinals of the Copa America on Thursday after goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved two spot-kicks in the shootout.

The match had finished 3-3 after extra time, with Argentina twice coming from behind to level the scores.

Lionel Messi gave Argentina the lead in the 12th minute, but Ecuador hit back through Enner Valencia in the 47th minute.

Lautaro Martinez restored Argentina's advantage in the 84th minute, but once again Ecuador drew level, this time through Angel Mena in the 90th minute.

In extra time, Messi scored a stunning free-kick to put Argentina ahead for the third time, but Pervis Estupinan equalized again for Ecuador in the 113th minute.

In the penalty shootout, Martinez saved spot-kicks from Enner Valencia and Gonzalo Plata to send Argentina through to the semifinals.

Conclusion

Argentina will now face Colombia in the semifinals on Tuesday, while Ecuador will play Uruguay on Sunday.

The Copa America final will be played on July 10th.
